Character Representation

Name: Yeliz

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Ethnicity: Turkish

Background: Yeliz lives by herself, she has no family members close by so if she needed help she wouldn't be in range of any. She Just moved into the suburbs and in her small neighborhood nobody knows her well so she is literally a stranger to the town. She lives next door to roommates who are very mysterious about their way of life as they are hardly ever seen. She is mentally unstable and the order of events that occur trigger her to become fragile and afraid as she has to scurry for survival.
Purpose to the Narrative: She is the main character and victim of the Thriller, she has to do what it takes to be able to survive. The opening scene will evolve around a nightmare that she has during the night and what outcomes face her are all based in her mind. She covers the whole stereotype of Thriller movies with the innocent female victim character which is successful as the audience are able to bond with the weak character and anything that happens to them affects the audience as they are trapped within the tension that is building up. Part of the narrative, she is in bed having nightmares, then suddenly rises from her bed. She makes her way to get some water as all the heavy breathing has caused her a dry throat, then we start seeing the man in the gas mask in the house. When the phone rings she will see the gas mask man and fled away upstairs but she will be denied to the rooms above. She gives up and drops to the floor when she is grabbed, she lashes her leg out to the gas mask man in order to flee the staircase and she runs outside to meet her nightmare
How would the character appeal to an audience: If the victim was male it wouldn't seem as harsh if he lived through the same events but as she is a female there is that aspect where the audience will have some hope as she will be perceived as weak compared to the antagonist. The innocent female is a common convention to most thriller films as she is usually weak and vulnerable. We have chosen this character to follow the commons of a traditional thriller and make a sympathetic connection to the audience. Thrillers need the audience to have a connection to the main characters in the film so the audience show emotion when the victim faces the 'unwanted' guest at her door. If the audience don't show emotion then they wont jump or be scared when Yeliz is attacked.

Name: Unknown

Age: Unknown

Gender: Male

Ethnicity: German

Background: The character has a history of mental illness and and thinks he is in a past time. the characters family originate form Germany and the subjects farther fought in the 2nd world war. The subject is a known racist and has recently moved from his isolated town in Germany that have communist connections with the Ukraine to the area which Yeliz has settled in her home. He can be seen as a psychopath as he is determined to haunt Yeliz, he manages to seem unnatural and does what he can in order to take her life. He stalks her house to play around with Yeliz's mind and his hidden identity has many tricks of its own.
Purpose to the Narrative: One of two antagonists. Racist background and Yeliz is the victim to this psychopath as he will do what he can to take her life, he plays with her mind to pull every string linked to her mental strength and he takes her to her last stand as he takes part in some brutal attacks. he lives in the same region of Ukraine that Yeliz lives in and he has spent months closing in on her. Within the narrative he is basically the murderer, Yeliz will do her best but in the end we all know that the innocent victim in this case never survives what is coming to them, and this plays along very well with the codes and conventions of a typical Thriller genre narrative.
How would the character appeal to an audience: This gives the audience the impression that the unknown subject is persuasive and devious. It will show the corrupt nature and unveiled lifetime problems Paul and his counterpart has and gives the sense that they are both vulnerable and weak minded. The mask shows he has something to hide and this can in many ways be related to fear as he is trying to hide himself, and for the audience they will feel that the mask is his only defence and that really without the mask he is nobody, so he will appeal to them because there will always be that part of the audience that hope in some part of the film that the mask will come off and his past will fall.

Name: Paul Wright

Age: 24

Gender: Male

Ethnicity: White British

Background: A high-end businessman, with shares in a company and everything he wants. His farther owns the company and has secured his role. After a pattern of being late, he starts to become mysterious. He has unregistered meetings with someone who just moved from Ukraine that last hours at a time. He starts to turn up in old coloured clothes and starts to speak like he is from another time. He becomes a major collector in German WW2 artifacts and locks himself in his office without any communication to the rest of the building. The other subject starts to dress in the businessman's clothes and people start to wonder what this group and organisation of men are up to as they continue to take up in mysterious activities.
Purpose to the Narrative: In the narrative he is estimated to be the counterpart of the man in the Mask, his identity is not as hidden because he is not the main villain but only an aid to taunt the victim so that his master can hawk down on them like a predator. In the house he his seen in a few part as he is mainly analysing Yeliz's behaviours in order to do his evil deeds.
How would the character appeal to an audience: The audience would like to think that as he is only the sidekick, that if he was taken down it would make the other villain week as he will not have any back up and as a single warrior be weak and fragile. The audience will try to hope that something goes wrong for him so it reflects on to his master which in turn may cause the downfall of both villains.

Individual Narrative

Individual Narrative
Characters

A female victim
Two masked males who are the main antagonists

Settings

A house which is in a suburb that is out in the open in Ukraine, within a quiet neighborhood. Dark and abandoned the female is at home alone which is good as this sense of lost surroundings builds up suspense.

Conventions of a Thriller that will be used

The character we will use are to be a female character who is presumably the victim of the opening scene to my thriller narrative, will have woken up from a nightmare in the middle of the night where she is being chased down a lond road by the villain in the mask who is running after the helpless female. She is petrified and has not come to her senses once she has woken, she is breathing rapidly and needs a drink of water to ease her throat. she leans over to the glass on her bedside draw but there is only a drop of water remaining, this results in her stepping out of bed and heading of downstairs for more water. she will open the fridge once in the kitchen with the camera placed in the fridge so that we can see the look on her face as she searches for water. when she places the glass on the table there will be a figure in the glass door behind her, she will see his refelction on the window of the cupboard and spin around to catch them in action but to only find there is no one there.

The telephone starts ringing in the front room, on the window sill. she picks it up and hears a muffled voice which screeches through the phone line, this fades into a beeping effect which means the phone call has ended. someone is banging on the back door which she immediately drops the phone and runs to the front door, to find it half open. when somebody knocks on the second front door she runs back insinde to find the phone hooked back up, remembering she dropped it confuses her.

When the female walks back into the living room she finds the antagonist at the other end of the room sitting at the dining table watching her. She sprints out of the front door engaged in the shock of seeing someone in her house, she becomes engaged in running as far as possible

Opening Credits

Se7en

These are the credits at the start of a film or programme that introduce the important roles, or in some cases the most famous actor/actress, these noted roles consist of director, writer and main actors. The opening credits can be shown in several different ways, but usually they are shown with a background soundtrack/audiomusic and an opening of a scene or piece of the film. This piece of film usually sets the scene to the movie and gives the audience a foundation of the movie.

There are no specific colours used, mainly dull lighting and shadows are present. Some of the colours used are pale and have no attraction to them, also everything in the scene is dirty and does not look appealing. When there is a close up lighting becomes high but when there camera is showing    images    on screen low-key lighting is used even when a blank dark screen comes up it shows the credits with the dark background. I think the black colours represent enigma at the start because we only see a pair of hands and the black colours that phase in between every shot creates a mystery based on what he is attempting to do. The white also shows innocence while it contrasts to the black colours, also the white credits on the black background shows that what he is doing contains a mystery.

The style of the credits in the film uses intense music that builds up tension as the credits play along. The credits do not come up in a certain pattern that matches the others, eat item of text is presented at a random view every time. If they were made to look neat every time it wouldn't present the thriller based upon its contents. The scruffy looking credits show that careless events are going to take place in this movie

The colours present in this style of crediting is very dull at first. Its is with low key lighting that a woman's face is the camera shot and the writing present in the credits is stroked letters with a transparent fill showing the woman's face through the text.
Also the black and white turns into a wine red filter which still doesn't show any colours but adds fear to the woman's face. When the screen becomes black and these abstract beams of light start to move around in the air it only creates mystery through the convention of enigma. The music used alongside it is classical music which seems to intensify as the credits play along on the screen.

Group Analysis and Ideas

As a group we have discussed the different credits and which ones we liked and preferred. We like the used of motion tracking in other opening credits that we have seen and we also like the idea of white text on the background but with a glow like it would be a light. An example of this is
:

But we want it to be white or more suitable colours. we want them to be gloomy and dark or at least the rest of the shot to be dim white a bright white text. one of the fonts that we liked we saw when we were watching a YouTube video, the font is called optic and it has sharp edges that resemble a knife. this font was obtained from Dafont.com.

Another font that we liked was called face your fears and this was also from Dafont.com. this style looks like it is blood painted onto something which shows death and this is the font that we will be using.

Group Mise-en-Scene

Mise-en-Scene Group
The purpose of this is to create the right image of a camera shot and it is a very convenient way to portray conventions of a Thriller. It helps construct every part of a film in order for it to contain the right elements needed. The different categories we need to follow in order to have a successful thriller are:
Lighting
Clothing
Iconography
Body language/expressions
Positioning of character(s)

Lighting
There will be three main light sources. There will be light from outside which will be the backlighting. The lamps will be used as main light as to keep the room dark enough to keep to the common conventions to thriller films. The filler lighting will be a combination of different light all over the house and will be used antagonistically. We will use the fridge light to fill the lighting in the kitchen whereas the backlighting in the living room will be a lamppost and a dim flood light to just increase the power of the lamp post. These lights are very slight so will not be very obvious but will give us the slight bit of light needed. We will use low key lighting to keep to the common conventions to a 'typical' thriller film. This is to create shadows so the characters look intimidating and allow the audience to see what is not directly in the camera shot. We will use lighting to make the scene bright enough for the raw footage to be clear enough, so then for editing we will be able to edit to clip so it is low-key lighting which is conventional for a thriller film. The low-key lighting in the movie gives it a dark colour which reflects on the emotions of the character to show dark events are going to take place within the sustained amount of time.
Costume Design
For the victim, we want to make her as vulnerable as possible so we have given the character a costume of casual home clothing such as pyjamas to aid the fact that she is taken by surprise. This shows that she weak and that the killers unexpected arrival has confused her and taken her by surprise. The killers will be dressed all in black whilst there faces will be hidden with the use of a gas mask. This is to put fear and an unsolved identity so that the victim does not know who they are and what they are doing. This is important to the conventions of a thriller because it shows that they want to be seen but not identified so that the audience is suspicious into who it is.The hidden identity is the code of enigma which is a good convention as it is mysterious to the audience  which is a very good way to build up tension for the audience as the question of identity will always be there to portray the convention. The home clothing that the victim is wearing is a good way to for surprise as she isn't prepared for what is going to take place which makes it tense for the audience to view as she is attacked out of nowhere.
Iconography
For the props we will be using a small range; a phone, a door, a glass, a fridge, and masks. we are going to use all of these because each plays a part in what the killer is doing. as the door and the phone are going to tell the audience that something is going to happen to the character because you know that there is a killer in the house and outside. the cup of water is the excuse for the lady to get out of bed which then leads into the rest of the story and finally the masks are for the killers to hide there faces and to add a fear affect to them. The significance of using the phone will be to break the suspense as its building up, then the unexpected phone bell makes the audience question who it may be but obviously there is not going to be anyone who picks the phone up causing the victim to feel fear. We will not give our villains weapons or any sort of item to inflict violence with because in common conventions the villain always has a weapon of any kind and we think that our villain will look weak if he has the weapon so without one it makes his actions unpredictable and deadly.
Body Language/ Facial Expressions
The body language of the victim will first of all be calm and tired. She will seem distraught and numb throughout the narrative as she has just woken from a drastic nightmare so she will not be in any other mood. There will be a sense of confusion on her face by the first time she believes she got a glimpse of the masked man and this puts her on edge for all she knows somebody could be in the house. As the clip goes on she becomes tense and wiry and her facial expressions shows fear and confusion. Then finally towards the end she is all but shocked surprisingly that these events are actually happening to her. she will be viewed as petrified and all her body language shows this. whilst all this is happening the killer looks like he is under control and is calm but we cannot tell what kind of emotions he is under because we cannot see any facial features or physicall giveaways that show what he is feeling.
Character Positioning
We will position the characters all through the scenes, in the bedroom you notice Yeliz is always right up to the camera showing that she is the victim and the killer is a mid range to a long range to the camera showing the he is the killer because you can always see what he I doing. There is dramatic irony as the audience see the masked man but never does Yeliz actually know someone is there until she really sees him, up till then she only thinks she saw someone which makes her very tenses. the masked villain will always be a set distance away from Yeliz until he actually comes in for an attack, the barrier between them will build tension as the audience know he is there but do not know when he is actually going to take any sort of action towards Yeliz.

Planning The Production

Camera Operator: A camera operator or cameraman is a professional operator of a film or video camera. In film making, the leading camera operator is usually called a cinematographer, while a camera operator in a video production may be known as a television camera operator, video camera operator, or videographer, depending on the context and technology involved, usually operating a professional video camera. The camera operator is responsible for physically operating the camera and maintaining composition and camera angles throughout a given scene or shot. In narrative film making, the camera operator will collaborate with the director, director of photography, actors and crew to make technical and creative decisions. In this setting, a camera operator is part of a film crew consisting of the director of photography and one or more camera assistants. In documentary film making and news, the camera is often called on to film unfolding, unscripted events. In 2006, there were approximately 27,000 television, video, and motion picture camera operators employed in the United States.

Participants: Arthur and Orcun are most experienced with cameras as well as having good knowledge about them. They were also the ones who chose the camera shots within the pre-production of the thriller.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Actor: Is a person who acts in a dramatic or comic production and works in film, television, theatre or radio in that capacity

Participants: Sam and Orcun are simply the tallest, to fit the role of the actors we need tall, male actors; in which they fit.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Sound Technician: An audio engineer, also called audio technician, audio technologist, recording engineer, sound engineer, sound operator, or sound technician, is a specialist in a skilled trade that deals with the use of machinery and equipment for the recording, mixing and reproduction of sounds. The field draws on many artistic and vocational areas, including electronics, acoustics, psychoacoustics, and music. An audio technician is proficient with different types of recording media, such as analog tape, digital multitrack recorders and workstations, and computer knowledge. With the advent of the digital age, it is becoming more and more important for the audio technician to be versed in the understanding of software and hardware integration from synchronization to analog to digital transfers.

Participants: Sam, Harry, Arthur, Orcun
_________________________________________________________________________________
Editors: A film or video editor is responsible for assembling raw material into a finished product suitable for broadcasting. The material they work with may consist of raw camera footage, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and special effects. This is a key role in the post-production process and the editor's skill can determine the quality and delivery of the final product. The editor may be part of a team and they will usually work closely with the director to achieve the desired end result. The majority of film/video editors are employed on a freelance basis, working on short-term contracts for post-production studios, television companies and corporate employers. Editors may work on a variety of productions including feature films, television programmes, music videos, corporate training videos or advertisements

Participants: Sam, Harry, Arthur, Orcun
_________________________________________________________________________________
Film Director: Directors are responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film under the overall control of the film producer. Together with the producers, directors develop a vision for a film. Once this vision is developed it is then the director’s job to carry out the vision and decide how the film should look. Directors are responsible for turning the script into a sequence of shots. They also direct what tone it should have and what an audience should gain from the cinematic experience.
Participants: Arthur is the most experienced in film making and directing so he is the director since he is most suited for the role.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Location Manager: The location manager is responsible for the finding and securing locations to be used and coordinating the logistics involved for the production to successfully complete its necessary work. They are also the face of the production to the community and responsible for addressing the issues that may arise due to the production's impact on the community
Participants: We are filming in Harry's house so it is his location we are filming and the second part of the film is recorded in Sam's garden which is his location, therefore they are both the ones organising the location, becoming the location managers.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Storyboard Organiser: This person will work out how long each camera shot will take and where the camera should be positioned based on the purpose of that camera shot.

Participants: Arthur and Orcun thought up the whole concept and story of the thriller so they will be the ones who will be coordinating the story correctly, since they are most clear of it and what they want the story to be filmed like.

Preliminary task

Preliminary task

For our Preliminary task we took two people and portrayed them as if they were actors and what we done was show one person walk into a room and use different camera shots to show how they walk into the room and begin their conversation.
While filming this short clip it brought up the difficulties in how we could film our own thriller film, it taught us how we could film the different camera shots.
In school we used a class room which didn't have many lessons going on around it so we were able the use a suitable setting for the film as it was quiet which was good during recording as there wasn't any excess background noise which got in the way of our filming and the conversation that took place. We were also able to adjust the lighting in the room so that everything could be clearly seen while the camera shots transact between one another. This task was used just like training for when we filmed our thriller, it allowed for us to use the equipment correctly and get over the mistakes we could have made while using the different equipment. This helps for us to save time when it came to our film as we already learnt how to use different aspects that contributed to the final film that we was going create.

As we only had one camera, to be able to film both people as they added to the conversation, what we had to do was film the conversation twice exactly. Once from over one persons shoulder then again from the other persons shoulder then crop to separate things that are said and sequence both conversations into one so that while the whole conversation is taking place you see the persons face that is talking as the clip is watched.
This clip can be watched and if there are any mistakes throughout we can make sure while filming the actual film we can make sure we don't make the same mistakes again. We also learnt what camera shots are best used appropriately and also look at the setting we use, if it is suitable the thriller and it will allow us to make a much professional film.

What Is A Thriller Film

What Is A Thriller Film

Codes and Conventions
Enigma -  A mystery is always present in a thriller film. In the opening scene of Saw 1 the mystery is the two men chained to the poles and also the dead body that lays on the floor.

Suspense - The mental uncertainty caused by a film which leads to anxiety about the outcomes of certain actions taken in the film. In prom night when Richard has the hat on he is trying to cover up his identity and this causes uncertainty for the audience who try to figure him out.

Tension - The mental strain given to the audience by the thriller film. At the start of Saw 1 there is intense music playing which with the pitch played at makes it a tense environment.

Character Representation - Studying the characters costume and facial expressions we can understand what mental position they are in, also by the way they act. Kristen in The Strangers is wearing the light colored dress and she has the frown on her face which makes her look like a victim as she is presented very weak.

Violence - An act of Brutality is always present within thrillers for the extra edge, it makes the environment fire up after the tension has built up. For example in scream 2 when Randy is talking on the phone the mysterious characters voice creates tension until randy is killed at the end of the scene.

Dramatic Irony - When something is understood by the audience but not quite gasped by the characters. The police are murdered in scream 4 but the others do not know about it and when they go and get help from them they realize that they're not there.

Sound  - When sounds are played at different adjustments at different times to allow a variation of emotions to be created within the audience. The high pitch sounds used at the start of Saw 1 within the opening scene, allows for tension to build up and this technique is useful as it plays with the audiences thoughts by changing their emotions.

Editing Techniques - This is how the clips are edited differently to change the pace of the movie, in a Thriller slow editing is used to build up tension so that when a different editing technique is used the tense outcome is suspended. The strangers has a scene when someone is knocking on the door and the pace of the film is moving very slow to build up tension during the scene.

Costume/Identity - The costume work by a character is very important as it reflects on the part they take in a movie. Looking at the film Scream the killer is dressed in black with the grim reapers mask showing he is taking part to kill people in the story line.

Codes and Conventions in opening of Saw
Low key lighting - Dark opening to the scene

High key lighting - After the lights are switched on it is very bright

Setting - Dirty abandoned bathroom which looks abandoned and disused

Sound - Intense music to create tension
The voice of the man shouting

Enigma - Two men chained up with a dead body
In his hands are a gun and tape recorder

Editing - Slow editing with some jump cuts

Costumes - casual outfits showing they were abducted while having a normal day

Characters - A Doctor and a man called Adam

Opening scene from Saw 1
In the opening scene of the movie Saw 1, it begins with the camera shot and in the mise en scene there is low key lighting used as there is no lighting used in the frame. It starts off with off screen sound as we cannot see where the sound is coming from, but we know the place is far and abandoned as another voice tells him to be quiet, its pointless yelling

When the lights are switched on the camera find it difficult to focus as do the characters being consumed by the dark for a while. The high key lighting now allows us to view the situation occurring in what seems like a bathroom. When we get a perspective of what is inside the abandoned bathroom, we see a dead body on the floor covered in blood and two men chained to water pipes on the side. This creates enigma as the first thought of the audience is suspicion of how the two men were brought here, and what is of the body which seems dead for now.

The dead body on the floor, covered in blood and brutal scars, has a gun in one hand and in the other a tape recorder. This adds tension, as the gun only has one purpose to kill, but the audience doesn't understand why it is there. The tape recorder to play a tape, but if no tapes in it, then where are they.

While the camera does a 360 over the body on the floor, the high pitch intense sounds used create suspense as they give the impression something bad has happened.

The way this opening scene works is how it creates a lot of questions and the way the sound and lighting is used contributes to the fact that the problem the two men are enduring needs to be solved, but looking at the elements of the scene we can see it isn't gonna be an easy escape for the struggles.

How Saw 1 opening scene will help me in my opening scene
The Lighting techniques used for the Mise-En-Scene will be something i would work with because it is a very important aspect of a thriller film, how the light portrays scene.

The sound techniques are very good as they effectively strain on to the audience building some good suspense throughout any scene.

The mystery created is also useful for tension, if the audience at some points feel confused or do not understand what is going on this makes it a tense composure for them as they watch the thriller.

Scream 1 Opening scene

The opening scene starts of in a kitchen where Casey is making popcorn. In this scene we only see the garden and home interior. It seems like she lives alone so if anything were to happen to her nobody would really notice. Casey is represented as easy as she quickly falls into a conversation with the stranger on the phone, she also looks very on edge as she reacts immediately to things that happen. She is wearing white clothing which reflects on her as being the weaker character.

The popcorn builds its own tension as the bag keeps expanding you never know when its going to explode. In terms of shock surprise suspense , suspense is being built up as the stranger on the phone taunts Casey. Surprise element in this scene is that is the caller ever going to shoe himself to Casey. Shock contradicts on if something does happen to Casey , how then will the audience feel.

There is a wiry tone playing during this scene which helps build up tension as at one point the sound good intensify and reflect on the story of the film. The strangers voice on the phone is also very subtle as it draws the question to who he may be.

When she has been killed and is hanging on the tree, there is a jump cut editing technique from her mother seeing her, then the camera focusing straight on the body with a close up camera shot viewing Casey hanging on the tree. Also when she is being chased by the killer the music pitch varies on the action taking place.

Age Certificates : bbfc

File:BBFC Logo.svg is the British Board of Film Classification and what this organization does is observe films and state them with suitable certificates depending on the content of the film and what age groups the film is targeted at. This covers all aspects to the films different age groups can legally view or even be the right age to purchase the film.

Regarding the film industry BBFC takes a major stand in how they allow films to be viewed to the public, this is very important as the analysis' they make on films have to be correct otherwise it could cause problems with the people that view the film. If the BBFC didn't take any part in this young children would be watching unsuitable films which could affect their mental health as the things they watch is not made for their age group.

Age certificates are there to consider who watches what in the sense that if everyone is watching things that are suitable for them then it doesn't affect people in the the wrong way, but things will be how they are suited. Overall it is obvious that these regulations are put in place to keep film watchers and other associates safe while they view films.

The Ratings are UC , U , PG , 12 A , 12 , 15 ,18 and R 18 which is not mainly public.

U

Universal is the beginning  off the age certificates as all content in Universal rated films contain nothing unsuitable for children, they are perfectly suited for anyone of any age group to view.

Toy Story 2 is a U rated film aimed at children.

PG

Parental Guidance is emitted to a Film even though it is suitable to any age group. it may contain mild Language or even Sex/Drug references. Can contain violence to a certain extent if justified. A parent may need to accompany a child while watching this due to its mild extremities.

Paranorman is a PG rated film.

12A

My Thriller Opening Scene

I would film my thriller opening scene so it is suitable for 15 and over. mainly 15 would work best as the content that is going to be included in the movie and it is content that will work best with a thriller movie. If i used 12 rated content i would not be able to fully justify the codes and conventions of a thriller. So overall 15 would be the best as i would be able to portray the codes and conventions of a thriller in a better stance than if it were any other rating.
